Exploring Watercolor Painting (this workshop has filled; a waiting is list available)
Saturday, April 28, 9 am – 4:30 pm, with a 45-minute break for lunch
All levels welcome, including absolute beginners

Tuition: $110

In this class, we will explore several different watercolor painting techniques, including wet-in-wet, glazing, and drybrush. Beginners will learn the basics of working with watercolors, while more experienced students will gain new insights into how to control washes, edges, and handle problems and mistakes.

Class time will be divided between demonstration and time for guided practice. Basic watercolor painting supplies are required; a list will be provided at registration (or before, by request), but if you are already painting, the supplies that you currently use will usually suffice. Tuition is $110; you can pay 50% at the time of registration and the other 50% a week before class. Class size is limited to 5 students, so everyone will receive plenty of one-on-one attention.

Taking Control of Your Watercolors
Saturday, July 11, 9 am – 4:30 pm, with a 45-minute break for lunch
All levels welcome, but students will get the most out of this class if they have at least tried watercolors before

Tuition: $110

Have you ever heard or thought that watercolors were unpredictable? This fun workshop will teach you to better understand the behavior of watercolors, putting you in charge of your paintings, removing most of the guesswork, and allowing you to paint more confidently. The key is to understand the nature of water on paper, and I want to show you how. As well as learning to understand watercolor behavior, you will gain new skills in paint application, handling edges, reserving whites, and correcting errors.

Class time will be divided between demonstration and time for guided practice. Basic watercolor painting supplies are required; a list will be provided at registration (or before, by request). If you are already painting, the supplies that you currently use may be enough. High quality cold-pressed paper sold in single sheets or a block (not a pad) and quality brushes made specifically for watercolor painting are imperative. Tuition is $110; you can pay 50% at the time of registration and the other 50% a week before class. Class size is limited to 5 students, so everyone will receive plenty of one-on-one attention.

Color Theory and Composition: Creating Better Paintings
Saturday, August 15, 9 am – 4:30 pm, with a 45-minute break for lunch
All levels welcome, but students will get the most out of this class if they have at least some painting experience (in any medium)

Tuition: $125

This workshop is ideal for students who want to do more than just paint; they want to learn the secrets of creating more interesting, dynamic paintings that hold the viewer's attention. Taking the time to carefully plan your paintings sets you up for success. In this class, I will teach you new skills for choosing a subject, developing a concept, planning a composition, and creating a strong focal point. I will also show you how to understand and use color theory, as well as values and other elements, to create a mood and direct the viewer’s eyes. We will do a few exercises in class and you will also go home with several handouts that I have made to help you retain the knowledge and refresh your understanding long after class is over.

This class will be geared more toward watercolors, as that is what I will be using in class, but painters of other mediums are just as welcome. Some basic supplies will be necessary and a list will be provided at registration (or before, by request). Tuition is $125; you can pay 50% at the time of registration and the other 50% a week before class. Class size is limited to 5 students, so everyone will receive plenty of one-on-one attention.

Additionally—for all workshops:
Students may bring up to 3 paintings from home (finished or not) for a one-on-one 20-minute critique after class for $10. (First come, first served.)

I also teach individual and small groups with flexible classtimes at my place or yours.

Individual watercolor lessons

You will receive 100% personalized lessons so you can learn at your own best pace and concentrate on areas that are most important to you! All levels are welcome, even if you have never painted before. Lessons will be at my home in Northwest Greensboro or I can travel to you in the local area. (A small travel fee may apply and will be based on distance from my home.) Tuition is $75 per 2-hour class.

Small group watercolor lessons

For couples and/or friends (2 – 4 students at a time) who would like to take classes together. Since these classes are small, each student gets plenty of one-on-one time to address their needs and interests. All levels are welcome, even if you have never painted before, but students learning together should have a similar experience level to get the most out of their class time.  Lessons will be at my home in Northwest Greensboro or I can travel to you in the local area. (A small travel fee may apply and will be based on distance from my home.)

Tuition depends on class size. Small group rates for 2-hour classes:

2 students, $50 per person

3 students, $42 per person

4 students, $37 per person
